Nowadays, industrial companies usually operate international production networks with globally distributed locations. However, these highly efficient networks are vulnerable to disruptions and heavily dependent on external influences and the development of individual countries. Country risks arising from socio-political or economic developments have a decisive influence on these networks.
The Innosuisse-funded project with four Swiss industrial companies focused on developing a systematic approach to identify and assess country-level risks. As a result, several management tools and methods, such as the Plant Risk Matrix, were created. These tools enable companies to capture and monitor risks through data-driven insights. The Plant Risk Matrix categorizes production sites based on their importance and associated country risk. Site importance is determined using internal data, such as the number of unique products, while country risk is evaluated using external economic and socio-political data. This continuous risk monitoring is integrated into advanced software, allowing for multi-level, data-based risk analysis and scenario planning for future country developments.
