Smarter Together

Supporting the development and commercial exploitation of business models for Smart Cities

SMARTER TOGETHER is a Horizon 2020 project that is sponsored by the European Union. As part of one of the biggest EU Research & Innovation programs ever with a total of 80 bn € of funding for different projects, SMARTER TOGETHER aims to improve the quality of life in European cities. To achieve this goal smart and inclusive solutions are developed in urban districts. The solutions are focusing on the areas of citizen & stakeholder engagement, holistic refurbishment, data management platform & smart services, electric-renewable energy sources as well as e-mobility.

The Energy Innovation Lab at the Institute of Technology Management at the University of St. Gallen is commissioned to support the commercial exploitation and the business model development of co-created smart city solutions in the three lighthouse cities Munich, Lyon and Vienna. The experienced researchers provide the involved parties with an understanding of the business model concept and the business model innovation process by building on tools and best practices that have emerged from research.

Additionally, the University participates in the Business Models and Finance Task Group, which aims at harmonizing the different Smart City projects under the Horizon 2020 umbrella to promote cross-collaboration between the projects.

The project consortium consists of over 30 partners from diverse backgrounds and eight countries as private companies, building owners, research & technology organizations, the and universities. The three lighthouse cities Munich, Lyon and Vienna are implementing the measures, monitoring the results and preparing the ground for replication for the three follower cities Santiago de Compostela, Sofia and Venice. The outreach of the project is further increased through the integration of Eastern & Asian perspectives from the two observer cities Kiev and Yokohama.
